Soon off to Binghamton, NY to install Recollections at the The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier. Then I go to Baltimore to install the first Elastic Surgery RT, complete with video printer, for a new Binney and Smith venture (makers of Silly Putty).
Speaking of silly, I've added a page that allows you to mess me up. Try it!

I'm just back from Japan now and am suffering from a cold and jet-lag, so please bear with me if I can't get back to you right away. Had a great time visiting the Sony Computer Science Research Labs and meeting my mentor Clark Kentarou, and found Michael Naimark is going a bit goofy in Gifu at IAMAS. And when in Mutsu, visit the (radioactive?) Science Museum!

I've updated the Elastic Surgery page to reflect the exciting new version...Elastic
Surgery RT! Please scroll down on that page and play the new video demo.
I'm back from Honduras. I installed Recollections III at Projecto Futuro in Tecagalapa. Sometime in the futuro they will finish the building and open their doors. Thanks to Claudia and Karla for being such fine hosts.
Tomorrow I'm off to Japan for two weeks. I'll be upgrading a Recollections in Mutsu, then visiting the Sony Computer Research Labs, IAMAS, Saibu Gas Museum in Fukuoka, relatives in Kagoshima, and who knows what else?

And some images from the show.

We had a great time in Phoenix at the ASTC Conference. Thanks to everyone
for the great feedback, and to the Arizona
Science Center for hosting my work and giving me so much support! This
was the trial run for my "Wacky Mirrors" and I was delighted and
sometimes surprised with the reactions. I'll be posting example clips from
the show.
Rehersals with the Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company continue. If you can make it to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on November 16th or 17th, you won't be dissapointed. Clips coming soon...
November 19 I fly to Honduras to install a "Recollections". See you there?

Well, we might as well set our calendars to year 0. We can call the new era
"AWTC" ... "After World Trade Center". The world has changed
for us all. Let's hope that cool heads prevail and the US and its new coalition
don't do anything to alienate the majority of the world from us and make yet
another era, this time devoid of humans. My condolences to the victims' family
and friends, and to us all. I am impressed and amazed with the human spirit
being shown. Perhaps good will prevail after this horrid act.
It has been a while since I've added anything to this news page. I haven't been idle though. I've added a keyboard interface option to Recollections that I installed at the Hands On Museum in Ann Arbor Michigan. After years of resistance, I finally gave in. I'm waiting for a report of it's success or failure. I've always been afraid that button pushing would diminish the experience of the piece. I think that by locating the control panel in a location where the participant will have the control that it might just work. You can see the panel on my "Recollections" page.
The most exciting development is the redesign of Elastic Surgery. I'm calling the new version Elastic Surgery RT for "real time". I didn't think it could be done, but now you see your image warping "live" as if you are looking into a warped mirror. Pressing the buttons then re-warps the mirror as if it's bending into a new position. This has been possible in the past with a Silicon Graphics workstation (very expensive), but I've tricked a PC into doing it, and it works beautifully. The resolution is great at 640x480 and it is running at 30fps. Good-bye Microsoft, hello Linux! Programming is fun again.
I'm redesigning Recollections, Sym-ulations, and Do-Undo utilizing the new system, and am working on a "Virtual Drawing" exhibit that will let users "paint" with colored props in the space and see their creations on a large screen in front of them as they do it. It's looking very cool!
I'm working on a new performance with Lily Cai and her Dance Company. We will be performing November 16-17 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. We'll be doing some groundbreaking work combining traditional Chinese ribbon dance with contemporary modern dance and my live video painting techniques. It's looking quite beautiful.
I'll be at the ASTC Conference in Phoenix Oct. 6,7,8. I hope to see you there. I won't have a booth, but I'll be showing my new work at the Arizona Science Center (the host of the conference) on the main floor. I'll also be giving a talk and demo on Sunday at 4:00PM in "The Speaker's Corner" in room Yuma 27 of the Phoenix City Plaza.

Installation of Recollections III at The Funhouse on Orcas Island off the
coast of Washington went well. The journey was well worth it, and a real adventure.
If you are in the Northwest US, you should visit Orcas Island and The Funhouse
in Eastsound. They will open in September.
I was recently in Europe where I installed a 16x9 format version of Recollections III at Technorama in Winterthur, Switzerland and delivered a prototype Recollections III to the British Science Museum in London. It will be in the Wellcome Wing and opens this summer.
